West Virginia has the highest rate of overdose deaths in the United States.
Overdose deaths in Mon County are increasing, we need to do MORE to prevent deaths AND link people to services.
Opioid (prescription pain medications or heroin) overdose is a preventable cause of death.
Naloxone, used to reverse an opioid overdose, is safe, effective and cannot be abused.
Approximately 50% of patients with substance use disorders have a co-occurring mental illness.
Only 10% of people who need addiction treatment, get treatment.
Some reasons why people do not get addiction treatment:
1. Lack of health insurance or ability to pay
2. Waiting lists to get into treatment
3. Very limited access to detoxification programs
4. Travel distance to treatment program
5. Complex medical & social problems
When someone overdoses and naloxone is administered, the person is put into acute opioid withdrawal and they may not be able to get addiction treatment when they want it.
People struggling with addiction have complex addiction, mental health and medical needs.
